Early handwritten gallery records embodied a quality of care; dusting them was like removing a film of dirt obscuring something essential that has been forgotten.
The Shipley Museum and Gallery, Gateshead.
The work was project managed by David Goard and supported by Gateshead College and The Shipley Museum and Gallery.
Interactive installation of found objects (handwritten gallery records, slides, office ephemera etc); wrapped with purple linen, bubble wrap and brass pins. Six plinths; emulsion paint (blue, green and red); framed text from artists dream diary; plants; 1920’s umbrella stand.
An abandoned basement room of museum office ephemera dating back to the 1930’s was uncovered during a museum residency. Selected items were installed in a derelict former museum caretaker’s residence: the windowless basement space was renovated by the artist for the installation, with reference to the original colour scheme as remembered by the caretakers son. Visitors were invited to unwrap parcels and make notes on their finds, echoing the handwritten records uncovered.
